A lot of places in Sri Lanka are bound with mythology. Unawatuna of Sri Lanka has an interesting story from the Indian-Sri Lankan mythology.

In the epic tale of Valmiki, “Ramayanaya”, the brother of King Rama, Laxman, gets injured in battle. The monkey king Hanuan is sent to bring medicinal herbs to heal Laxman. Hanuman, obsessed with superior powers, fails to identify the correct herbal plant. Therefore, he lifts the entire mountain and brings it. A chunk of the mountain falls down to a coastal area of Sri Lanka. The terminology “Una-watuna” gives the meaning “fallen down”. This area has been known as Unawatuna since then.

Unawatuna is a coastal town located in the Southern Province, Galle district of Sri Lanka. The area is a major tourist attraction for its exotic beaches, places of historical value and connected with mythology, and for eco-tourism related to the Coral reef protecting the beach and to a mangrove named Kadolana acts as a buffer in the lagoons of the area.

The beach is one of the twelve most beautiful and best beaches suitable to travel to in the world. There are a considerable number of tourists coming from all over the world to witness the never-ending beauty of the area.

Rumassala is believed to be the chunk of mountain fell from the Hanuman story (related above). The mountain faces the sea and it actually has a variety of medicinal herbs all over the mountain. Recently, a dagoba or a Pagoda of Buddha was built in the area called “Saama Chaithyaya” or the Pagoda of peace. A lot of Buddhists, local and foreign, come to worship this throughout the year.

The coral reef protecting the beach is a paradise for nature lovers. These can be visited in boats or diving facilities can be found frequently. The coat expands a long way creating a number of scenic beaches and calm lagoons all over the place. In the lagoons, the half salty water provides a perfect habitat for the growth of mangrove locally known as Kadolana. Kadolana creates an eco system filled with beauty, and a very high rate of bio-diversity. Boat rides are available for the tourists to go and visit the calm and cool mangrove caves covering a lot of waterways in the area.

There are a number of five-star tourist hotels located in the related area for lodging. Some of these are fashioned as traditional Sri Lankan rest houses, or modern hotels. The recently built southern expressway shortens the long driving hours to a very short fast drive. But still, if anyone likes to enjoy the view, they can always take the train or another means of transportation along the Galle road running with the shore.

This is a place actually worth seeing. So if you haven’t been there yet, come to visit Unawatuna, Sri Lanka. And you will find that you are unable to leave the place.
